Production of zirconia
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To produce high-purity ZrO2 having a small particle diameter without containing agglomerates, by blending zircon sand with CaO, melting the blend, quenching the melt, eluting the resultant Zr-containing product with hydrochloric acid, adding sulfuric acid to form precipitates, neutralizing the precipitates and firing the neutralized precipitates. CONSTITUTION:A blend obtained by blending zircon sand with a CaO-containing raw material is melted while heating, quenched by water granulation, etc., and pulverized to give an acid-soluble melt product, which is then brought into contact with a dilute aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid to form an acid-soluble melt product slurry. Calcium zirconate and calcium silicate are selectively eluted and separated from the resultant slurry to concentrate Zr. The calcium zirconate is then brought into contact and dissolved in concentrated hydrochloric acid to recover a Zr leachate. Sulfuric acid is then added to the Zr leachate to form precipitates of insoluble Zr salts and recover the Zr. The slurry after separating the precipitates of the Zr salts and washing is neutralized with an alkali and recovered as zirconium hydroxide, which is then dried, fired and pulverized to produce the aimed ZrO2 powder.
