Water-proof optical fiber cable and its manufacture
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To secure the axial mobility of an optical fiber core and to stabilize transmission characteristics against temperature variation by putting an optical fiber in a groove formed in a core body and providing a water-absorptive pressure winding layer thereupon. CONSTITUTION:The pressure winding layer 11 with high water absorptivity is provided to the outer periphery of the core body 5 and the groove width of the groove 6 where the optical fiber core 4 is stored is varied periodically. In another way, a groove is formed crossing the groove 6. When the cable provided with the pressure winding layer 11 is immersed in water, the pressure winding layer 11 absorbs water and expands to gel, but parts 10 which are wide in groove width are formed periodically, so gaps at both sides of the core are wide and the gel fills the gaps at the periphery of the core and contact parts between cores in a short time to form a light shield dam. Consequently, water immersion is stopped by the pressure winding layer with the high water absorptivity and no water-absorptive materials need not be arranged in the optical fiber storage groove 6 and at the periphery of the core, so the axial mobility of the core is secured when the cable is curved.
