Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To eliminate the influence of raised line breaking and crushing, etc., and to exactly detect a raised line direction by detecting the raised line direction through the average variable density value of various directional slits for each assembling area of a picture elements after dividing a processing object area into the plural picture elements. CONSTITUTION:The raised line pattern of a fingerprint, etc., is detected by a CCD camera 10 and divided into plural picture elements Si through an A/D converter 12. The pattern is stored as black-and-white variable density information in a data memory 16 by the program of a picture processing stored in a program memory 18 of a micro computer 14 for each fundamental unit are UA of the adjacent picture element assembly. The raised line direction of the same unit area UA is determined with the raised line direction of the pattern in the unit area UA as a DC direction out of the maximum values Da, Db and Dc of the difference between the maximum value and the minimum value among the average value groups of the variable density of the black-and-white variable density pattern for each picture element Si of respective directions D1, D2 and D3, and stored in a data memory 16.
