Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To reduce a shock produced at a moment when a lockup clutch has been engaged, by temporily changing a rate of change in time in a hydraulic pressure in a negative direction just before the lock-up clutch has been engaged, the hydraulic pressure being used for causing the lock-up clutch to engage. CONSTITUTION:There is provided a means A for detecting a prescribed period of time just before a lock-up clutch C has been engaged in a torque converter T. An output from the means A is applied to a prescribed period of time deter mining means B and a rate-of-change-in-time changing means D for an engaging pressure so that a rate of change in time of a hydraulic pressure for causing the lock-up clutch to engage is temporarily changed in a negative direction just before the lock-up clutch has been engaged. With the arrangement, a rota tional speed on input and output sides is synchronized very slowly and smoothly at a moment it has been engaged, whereby a shock caused at the moment the engagement has been completed can be minimized.
