Production of photochromic (meth)acrylic acid derivative polymer

Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer free from becoming opaque and from yellowing, outstanding in mechanical properties, by polymerization, under irradiation, of a hydrophilic (meth)acrylic acid derivative using, as the catalyst, compound(s) such as polytungstic acid. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer can be obtained by polymerization, under irradiation (e.g., ultraviolet irradiation), of (A) a hydrophilic (meth)acrylic acid derivative monomer [e.g. 2-hydroxymethyl (meth)acrylate], in the presence of, as the catalyst, (B) pref. 0.1-10wt.% of compound(s) selected from polytungstic acid, heterotungstic acid (e.g., heterosilicotungstic acid) and derivatives therefrom [e.g., tetrakis (tetrabutyl ammonium) decatungstic acid].
