Method for orienting liquid crystal molecule
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To orient liquid crystal molecules in a liquid crystal cell in such a manner that the major axis direction thereof are concentrically or radially unified by depositing an oxide or fluoride by evaporation on a substrate via a shielding plate having a slit opened to a suitable shape. CONSTITUTION:The substrate 2 is inclined by certain angle theta in the direction of a vapor deposition source 5 and is rotated about several to several tens times per minute. The region where a vapor deposition material is made incident on the substrate 2 through the shielding plate 3 provided with the slit 4 is limited so that the vapor deposition material is made incident only on the limited region of the substrate 2. The fluoride of magnesium fluoride or metal such as gold or aluminum is deposited by evaporation on said region to about 100-1000Angstrom thickness. The liquid crystal molecules on the substrate are thereby so oriented that the major axis direction thereof is always unified in the direction perpendicular to the slit and therefore, the concentrical molecular orientation is eventually obtd.
