Thin film magnetic head

Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To improve the reliability and electromagnetic conversion capability of a thin film magnetic head by forming the width of a magnetic pole part of an upper magnetic layer wider than the track width of an electromagnetic conversion part in the track width direction. CONSTITUTION:A gap part 5 has a gap length G1 in the track direction in an area of width T1 and two gap parts 5a, 5b positioned on both the ends of the gap part 5 in the track direction are formed over the areas of width T2, T3 with gap length G2, G3 larger than the gap length G1. In case of magnetic recording, the gap part 5 is used as a recording gap and the gap parts 5a, 5b are not functioned as recording gaps because the magnetic resistance of the gap parts 5a, 5b is larger than that of the gap part 5, almost all magnetic fields generated by a recording current are passed through the gap part 5 and no magnetic field is generated in the gap parts 5a, 5b. In case of reproducing, only the gap part 5 is functioned as a reproducing side gap. Consequently, the reliability and electromagnetic conversion capacity are improved.
