Variable light transmittance glass
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain variable light transmittance glass which obviates the leakage and scattering of liquid in the event of failure, etc. by inserting a high-polymer film which has electrolyte permeability and insolubility in an electrolyte soln. into the electrolyte soln. between two sheets of substrates each provided successively with a transparent conductive layer and electrochromic (EC) layer on a transparent substrate. CONSTITUTION:The film 9 which is made to have the electrolyte permeability by perforating holes of about 1mm. diameter at about 25-77pieces/cm<2> to a transparent high-polymer film insoluble in the soln. (soln. of N-dimethyl formamide, etc.) of the supporting electrolyte such as LiClO4, for example, polyvinyl butyral resin is inserted between a pair of the transparent substrates 4, 4 on the opposite surfaces of which the transparent conductive films 6 and the EC layers 2, 3 are provided. A high-polymer film of polyacrylonitrile, etc. soluble in the electrolyte soln. is preliminarily coated on both surfaces of the film 9 and spacers 10 consisting of transparent glass microballs are intervened therebetween to permit the easy insertion of the film 9. The electrolyte is injected and sealed therebetween after the insertion of the film 9 and the cell is heated to dissolve the soluble high-polymer film; thereafter, the cell is cooled to make the electrolyte soln. highly viscous or gel-like. The safe variable light transmittance glass which prevents the leakage and scattering of the liquid even in the event of failure is thus obtd.
