Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain a picture having the compressed number of picture elements by means of a generally used CCD by arranging alternately in the horizontal direction the 2-dimensional vertical transfer CCDs which can be image picked up as well as photoelectric conversion parts of odd and even fields set alternately in the vertical direction and performing the simultaneous transfer of charge to those transfer CCDs from both photoelectric conversion parts. CONSTITUTION:Photodiodes A1-A200 and B1-B200 in odd and even fields are arranged alternately in the vertical direction. Then these photodiodes and the 2- dimensional CCD2 for vertical transfer which can be image picked up are arranged alternately in the horizontal direction. Then the charge is transferred simultaneously to those CCD2 from each photodiode. Then the transfer of charge to the horizontal transfer CCD3 from the CCD2 and the storage done by the CCD3 are carried out in (n) times. The contents stored in the CCD3 are read out to a reading circuit 4 once in (n) times. The circuit 4 resets the stored charge once in (m) times. Then the number of picture elements of the CCD2 is compressed down to half. At the same time, the number of picture elements of the CCD3 is compressed down to 1/m.
