2-phenylpyridine derivative

Abstract

Abstract NEW MATERIAL:The 3-phenylpyridine derivative of formula I (R1 is 4-10C straight-chain alkyl; R2 is 1-10C straight-chain alkyl). EXAMPLE:2-n-Butyl-5-(4'-heptyloxyphenyl) pyridine. USE:Useful as a component of a liquid crystal composition suitable for multiplex driving. It is a stable colorless liquid crystal compound exhibiting smectic liquid crystal phase. It has excellent miscibility with known nematic liquid crystal or liquid crystal compositions, and is useful a an additive effective to improve the electrooptical response of a liquid crystal composition. PREPARATION:1-Bromo-n-alkane is made to react with the compound of formula IIin ethanol in the presence of potassium hydroxide, an the product is chlorinated with thionyl chloride. The reaction product is formylated to obtain the compound of formula III. The objective compound of formula I can be prepared e.g. by reacting the compound of formula III with the reaction product of 2-n-alkylthiophene and acetyl chloride, etc.
