Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To manufacture a large-capacity device at low cost by providing cells which have ferroelectric liquid crystal between mutually parallel transparent substrates between two upper and lower polarizing plates, varying a molecule array with a DC voltage, and fixing the molecule array with an AC voltage. CONSTITUTION:Liquid-crystal cells which have ferroelectric liquid crystal of a chiral smetic C phase between mutually parallel transparent substrates are arranged in a matrix between two upper and lower polarizing plates to form an LC panel. Then, a display electrode driver circuit and a scanning electrode driver circuit are scanned in the X-axial and Y-axial directions with the output of a control circuit. Driving voltages of both driver circuits depend upon the output of a driving voltage generating circuit controlled by the control circuit. When the driving voltages are direct currents, the molecule array is varied to make a bright-to-dark or dark-to-bright change according to the polarity, and when AC driving is performed, the molecule array becomes constant and the current display state is held constant. Thus, the large-capacity panel is manufactured at low cost.
