Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To provide a thermal printer free of errors in changing over a recording mode, comprising a mechanism for detecting the presence or absence of an ink ribbon, performing thermal transfer recording by moving a head to one side when the ink ribbon is present, and performing thermal recording by reciprocating the head when the ink ribbon is absent. CONSTITUTION:Whether an ink ribbon spool 18 is set is detected by a sensor S, and when the spool 18 is set, a thermal transfer recording mode is established in which recording is conducted only when the head is moved rightward. When the spool 18 is not set, a thermal recording mode is established in which recording is conducted both when the head is moved rightward and when the head is moved leftward.
