Chiral smectic liquid crystal composition

Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To provide a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition having long helix pitch, high spontaneous polarization, and excellent response, by mixing two kinds of chiral smectic compounds having dextral and sinistral helices, respectively. CONSTITUTION:The objective liquid crystal compound contains (A) one or more chiral smectic liquid crystal compound of formula I [m and n are 1 or 2; X is group of formula II, formula III, etc.; R is 1-18C alkyl or alkoxy; Y is alkyl, alkoxy, etc. (preferably group of formula IV)] having asymmetric carbon atom (C*) wherein the C* in the group Y is positioned at the even position from the C atom of the benzene ring and does not form a racemic compound, and having dextral helix and (B) one or more chiral smectic liquid crystal compound of formula I (Y is preferably the group of formula V) wherein the C* in the group Y is positioned at the odd position from the C atom of the benzene ring, and having sinistral helix.
