Liquid crystal compound
Abstract
Abstract NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is 1-8C alkyl). EXAMPLE:1-Cyano-4-(trans-4-pentylcyclohexyl)cyclohexene. USE:A composition for a liquid crystal display. It exhibits nematic liquid crystal nature having positive dielectric anisotropy, and has wider nematic liquid crystal temperature range than the compound of formula R<1>-X-Y-R<2> (R<1> is alkyl, etc.; X and Y are benzene ring or cyclohexane ring; R<2> is alkyl, alkoxy, etc.). PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be produced by (1) reacting the compound of formula II with hydroiodic acid, (2) reducing the resultant compound of formula III by the catalytic hydrogenation to obtain the compound of formula IV, (3) oxidizing the compound with sodium hypochlorite to the compound of formula V, (4) reacting the compound with hydrogen cyanide, and (5) dephydrating the obtained compound of formula V with thionyl chloride.
