Manufacture of optical fiber coupler
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To prevent invasion of moisture and water and to obtain a coupling part high in strength and reliability by forming a metal reinforcing layer in an atm. freed of water vapor immediately after forming the coupling part of an optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:The metallic coat layers of the metal-coated optical fibers are removed with acid, alkali, or the like at the positions to be coupled. The exposed parts 5, 6 brought into contact with each other and heat melted to form a coupling part 7. Immediately after that, the exposed parts 5, 6 are coated with reinforcing layers 8A made of metal in an moisture-free atm. The layers 8A not only protect the coupled parts from moisture but also give mechanical strength to this part 7. To form the layers 8A, the sputtering or vacuum vapor deposition methods in which the moisture-free atm. can be easily realized are used.
