Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To separate automatically character and picture components, by sectioning an electric signal train obtained by scanning an original picture at a prescribed unit and comparing a specific waveform number having a rapid changing points and a constant for processing the system. CONSTITUTION:A binary picture signal 1 processing an electric signal obtained by scanning the original picrure is stored in a buffer memory 3 at a prescribed section. The number of signals 2 detecting a rectangular waveform having a rapid leading from the section is counted at a counter 8. When the signal 1 reaches a predetermined amount, a value N of the counter 8 and the constant P are compared 10 by taking a sectioning signal 9 as an index. When the count value N of the result of comparison is small, it is discriminated that the section is the result of scanning of a picture region having an intermediate tone such as a picture, an AND circuit 6 is opened and an encoded signal of a coder 4 compressing a picture signal of intermediate tone of the signals in the memory 3 with good efficiency is outputted from an OR circuit 7. When the value N of the result of comparison is large, an AND circuit 6' is opened and an encoded signal of a coder 5 compressing the signals of character picture of a single tone is outputted.
