Optical fiber maintaining plane of polarization
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To make the planes of polarization easily coincident in the case of connecting two optical fibers maintaining the planes polarization by embedding wire-like members having the refractive index differing from the refractive index of a jacket longitudinally in the jacket. CONSTITUTION:A core 1 is formed of, for example, GeO2-SiO2, and a clad 2 consisting of, for example, B2O3-SiO2 having an ellipse of the refractive index lower than the refractive index of the core 1 is formed around the core 1. The clad is coated thereon with a jacket 3 of, for example, quartz glass. Wire-like members 4, 4 having the refractive index differing from the refractive index of the jacket 3 are embedded longitudinally in the jacket 3. The members 4, 4 are formed of a material which has a high loss and has the refractive index higher than the refractive index of the material of the surrounding jacket 3, for example, TiO2-SiO2 glass or the like. The members 4, 4 are embedded in the prescribed relative positions with the plane of polarization, for example, in the positions on the straight line at a right angle to the long diameter of the clad 2 having an elliptical shape and running the core 1.
