Manufacture of oxysulfide of rare earth element

Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To manufacture easily the oxysulfide of a rare earth element of high quality, by reacting rare earth element ion with sulfate ion and urea and heating the resulting oxysulfate of the rare earth element in a hydrogen atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:>=1 Kind of rare earth element ion is reacted with sulfate ion and urea in an aqueous soln., and the resulting precipitate or the oxysulfate of the rare earth element obtd. by roasting the precipitate is heated in an atmosphere of gaseous hydrogen or a gaseous mixture of gaseous hydrogen with an inert gas to obtain the oxysulfide of the rare earth element. The rare earth element ion is prepared by dissolving an inorg. or org. acid salt of the rare earth element such as the sulfate, hydrochloride, formate or acetate in an aqueous soln. The sulfate ion is prepared by dissolving sulfuric acid, the sulfate of the rare earth element, the quat. ammonium salt of sulfuric acid such as ammonium sulfate or other salt of sulfuric acid such as pyridinium sulfate in an aqueous soln. A phosphor contg. the oxysulfide of the rare earth element as the base is obtd. by adding an activator for a phosphor to said aqueous soln.
