Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To exactly measure and display hardness by means of a simple signal processing, by deciding the maximum size of impression, or the like, in accordance with a binary signal corresponding to an impression reflected ray image by a photoelectric converting element group of a matrix array. CONSTITUTION:An impression 1 of a sample 2 is irradiated by a light source beam passing through a polarization plate 8, a half mirror 6, an objectibe lens 7, etc. Subsequently, a reflecte ray from the impression 1 passes through the lens 7, the mirror 6, a lens group 9, etc., and is photodetected by a photoelectric converting element group 12 of a matrix array of a solid element camera 11. This photodetecting signal is binary-coded by a binary-coding circuit 13, and an impression image is displayed on a cathode-ray tube 14. At the same time, in accordance with a binary signal from the circuit 13, an operating means 15 decides the maximum size of the impression in a prescribed direction proportional to Noop hardness, and the cathode ray tube 14 displays the Noop hardness by a numerical value. Accordingly, it is possible to exactly measure and display hardness even in case when the impression is small, by a simple signal processing, without executing a complicated processing, recognizing the whole contour of the impression.
