Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To make the difference of group delay time of the whole transmission path zero and to enable so-called mode equalization, by connecting a suitable optical fiber to the front end, the rear end or an intermediate part of the transmission path. CONSTITUTION:The difference of group delay time DELTAtaue of an optical fiber 3 for mode equalization and length Le is connected to the rear end of a transmission path. In order to make the difference of group delay time of the whole transmission path zero, an optical fiber satisfying the equation is connected to the rear end. The conditions of the optical fiber for mode equalization include small loss, connectibility to the transmission path at small loss, small size and easy handleability. The desired optical fiber for mode equalization satisfying these conditions is a fiber which discords slightly with the transmission path in fiber parameter and can ensuere a large difference of group delay time in spite of its small length, and a step type optical fiber is preferably used.
