Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high yield, by reacting a fluorine- containing aliphatic iodide with a carbonyl compound in the presence of zinc powder, etc., hydrolyzing the reaction product to carry out the fluoroalkylation reaction safely under ordinary conditions with easy operations. CONSTITUTION:A fluorine-containing aliphatic iodide of the formula RfI (Rf is <=10C fluorine-containing aliphatic group) is reacted with a carbonyl compound of the formula RCOR' (R and R' are <=15C aliphatic or aromatic group and together form a ring when both are aliphatic groups) in a solvent in the presence of zinc powder and/or a tin halide powder of the formula SnX (X is halogen) particularly under irradiation with ultrasonic waves at ordinary temperature and pressure, and the reaction product is then hydrolyzed with a mineral acid, e.g. HCl or H2SO4, to give the aimed fluorine-containing carbinol of the formula. In the case of the tin halide powder, a tertiary amine may be added in place of the irradiation with the ultrasonic waves. USE: A solvent and synthetic intermediate for monomers to prepare fluorine-containing polymers, water and oil repellents, etc.
