Abstract

Abstract NEW MATERIAL:A 4'-cyanophenyl 4-(α-alkoxymethyl) benzoate of formulaI(R is 1W10C alkyl). USE: A component in a liquid crystal composition, having a high Δε of+20° and low viscosity, and capable of increasing the Δε and lowering the operating threshold voltage without deteriorating the viscosity. PROCESS: A compound of formula II is reacted with a sodium alcoholate to give a compound of formula III, which is then hydrolyzed with an alkali to afford a compound of formula IV. The resaltant compound of formula IV is then reacted with thionyl chloride to give a compound of formula V, which is reacted with a compound of formula IV to afford the compound of formula I.
