Abstract

Abstract NEW MATERIAL:Liquid crstal esters of formula I (R is 5W9C straight chain alkyl). EXAMPLE: Compounds of formula II. USE: Compounds used to improve the characteristics of liquid crystals: since they have a wide liquid crystal temperature range, the liquid crystal compositions including the same is widened in the liquid crystal temperature range. They have large dielectric anisotropy and the liquid crystal with a negative dielectric anisotropy is changed to positive one by adding a small amount of the compound. PREPARATION: A compound of formula III is obtained from p-hydroxybenzoic acid and R-Br. The product is made to react with thionyl chloride to give a compound of formula IV. The compound is dissolved in acetone and made to react with a sodium hydroxide solution containing p-hydroxybenzoic acid to give a compound of formula V. The reaction of the compound of formula V with thionyl chloride gives a compound of formula VI, which is made to react with a compound of formula VII to give the compound of formula I.
