Liquid crystal composition

Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE: A liquid crystal composition capable of providing controlling effects on change in temperature of voltage characteristic like conventional effects by the addtion of a very small amount of an optically active substance, obtained by adding an l-menthol type optically active substance of a specific formula to a nematic liquid crystal having a positive dielectric anisotropy. CONSTITUTION: (B) One or more (preferably ≤6wt%) l-menthol type optically active substances shown by the formula (R is 1W8C straight-chain alkyl; * is asymmetric carbon), having a left spiral structure, is added to (A) a nematic liquid crystal (preferably cholesteric liquid crystal having a right spiral structure or chiralnematic liquid crystal having a right spiral structure) having a positive dielectric anisotropy, to give the desired liquid crystal composition.
