Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To achieve the improvement in gradation reproducibility by controlling not the irradiation quantity of an original but the simultaneous entire surface exposure according to the densities of the original. CONSTITUTION:This is a method of forming latent images by applying entire surface exposure simultaneously with charging and image exposure, wherein simultaneous entire surface exposure L is set by the selection of charging conditions or grid setting conditions or photoreceptor so that when it is made zero by closing a shutter 3 the original density versus latent image potential characteristics shown in the curve 2 are obtained. If it is set in this way, in the case of a pale character original, the shutter 3 is closed, whereby the easy-to-see images of high contrast in which the difference in the latent image potential between the characters and the white ground is large like 2 are obtained. In the case of a photograph or the like, the simultaneous entire surface exposure L is increased by opening the shutter 3 to correspond original density versus latent image potential 1 to 1, whereby the images faithful to the original are obtained. For an ordinary original, the exposure L is so controlled as to obtain the curve 1. In this way, the gradation reproducibility may be improved.
