Melt-sticking and connecting method of optical fiber
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE:To melt-stick and connect optical fibers at low losses by measuring the centers of the cores of the optical fibers through connecting and melt-sticking processes and adjusting the positions of the optical fibers with automatic fine adjusting mechanisms so that the off-centering of the cores and the change in the cores do not occur. CONSTITUTION:Beams A, C irradiated from a laser beam light source 6 for measurement are transmitted to optical fibers 1, 1', respectively. The scattering patterns of A, C are received in arrays 9, 11 for measurement, and these are inputted to a calculator 8. The calculator 8 controls an automatic fine adjusting mechanism 4 to butt the fibers 1, 1' without any off-centering. Next, the fibers are melt-stuck and connected by the laser beam irradiated from a laser beam light source 5 for melt- sticking. The irradiation of the beams A, C is continued even during this melt- sticking; at the same time, the laser beam B for measurement is transmitted through the connected part of the fibers 1, 1' and the automatic fine adjustment mechanism is so controlled by a similar method so as not to cause the shape change of the cores of the connected part. In this way, the optical fibers may be melt-stuck and connected at low losses.
