Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE: To produce a polymer of high polymerization degree having excellent wet heat resistance, by treating a linear saturated polyester having an intrinsic viscosity higher than a specified value, with a decarboxylating agent for reducing the content of carboxyl group, adding a compound having a specific structure to the above- treated polyester and reacting the resulting mixture. CONSTITUTION: A linear polyester having an intrinsic viscosity of at leats 0.35, s uch as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is treated with a decarboxylating agnet for reducing content which reacts with the terminal COOH groups of the polyester and liberates CO 2 , such as ethylene carbonate, thereby to reduce the amount of the terminal COOH groups of the PET to below 20eq./10 6 g. Then, to the reaction mixture is added 0.1W10pts.wt. of bisoxazolone and bisoxazinone compounds represented by formulas I and II, and the reaction mixture is reacted in the molten state. In this way, a saturated polyester having a low content of terminal COOH groups, excellent wet heat resistance, a high polymerization degree and superior mechanical properties is obtd.
