Novel optically active high-molecular-weight substance
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE: A novel optically active high-molecular-weight substance that is produced by polymerization of triphenylmethyl methacrylate using an optically active initiator, thus showing a large optical rotatory power. CONSTITUTION: Triphenylmethyl methacrylate is placed in a cell for measuring optical rotatory power which has the optical path of 1cm length and is tightly sealed and is dissolved in toluene and cooled to -40°C. Then, 5mol% of n-butyl lithium, based on the triphenylmethyl methacrylate, and (-)-sparteine solution in toluene is added in an amount of 1.2 times the molar quantity of the methacrylate. The methacrylate is cooled and polymerized in the optical rotatory meter. The rotatory power gradually increases and the polymer is isolated after the polymerization. The resultant polymer has a polymerization degree of 5 or higher and a specific rotatory power ([α]D 20 ) of higher 50° as an absolute value, which is the objectivee polymer.
