Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE: To shorten transmission time and also to reduce an influence of a transmission error by dividing a facsimile signal into basic picture elements and constituent picture elements, by sequentially coding a continuous number of basic picture elements, and by coding only needed constitutent picture elements. CONSTITUTION: White picture element and black picture elements of a facsimile signal for one line are divided into basic picture elements fixed at every N-th picture elements in a scanning-line direction, and constituent picture elements positioned between them. When there are not less than two picture elements among constituent picture elements between adjacent basic picture elements where informtion on a picture element right before it changes (from white to black or reversely), basic picture elements at its both terminals is temporarily made black. Then, a line of basic picture elements is coded. The position of a part where there are not less than two change points among constitutent picture elements among not less than two basic black picture elements continuing is coded by code B 1 , and original information on this constitutent picture element is also coded. Next, when information on adjacent basic picture elements is changing, the position of an element with an information change in a picture-element block between adjacent basic picture elements is coded by a distance from a basic picture element right before it.
