Production of metal nitride fine powder
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE: To efficiently produce the title powder of high purity by suspending metal oxide fine powder in a carbohydrate soln.; heating the suspension to carbonize the carbohydrate; and heating the resulting carbonaceous residue under an atmosphere contg. vapor of a N-contg. cpd. CONSTITUTION: Metal oxide fine powder is suspended in a carbohydrate soln. When a solid carbohydrate such as paper, pulp or rayon is used, it is finely pulverized to below 1 μ and suspended in water or other suitable liquid medium. It may be dissolved in an org. or inorg. solvent and used. an aq. soln. of starch, glucose or sucrose, or a soln. of a hydrolyzate thereof may be used. The suspension is then heated to above 250°C to carbonize the carbohydrate as well as to remove volatile components. The resulting carbonaceous residue is heated to 700W2000°C under an atmosphere contg. vapor of a N-contg. cpd. such as NH 3 or CH 3 NH 2 to convert the metal oxide in the residue into metal nitride.
