4-n-alkylbenzoxy-3'-chloro-4'-cyanobenzen
Abstract
Abstract NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is 1-9C alkyl). EXAMPLE: The compound of formula IV. USE: A compound having a strong positive dielectric anisotropy. Addition of a small amount of this compound to various nematic liquid crystals remarkably reduces the threshold potential of the liquid crystal, and gives acomposition applicable to a field effect display cell. PROCESS: The compound I is prepared by (1) reacting the compound II with a halogenating agent such as thionyl chloride, and (2) reacting the resulting compound II' (X is halogen, pref. Cl) with the compound III in an inert organic solvent such as diethyl ether. The compound III can be prepared by (1) reacting the compound V with a halogenating agent, (2) purifying the reaction product by distillation, (3) reacting the product with aqueous ammonia, (4) further reacting the product of the step (3) with thionyl chloride, (5) reducing the reaction product with stannous chloride and conc. hydrogen chloride, (6) adding the reduction product to dilute sulfuric acid, (7) adding an aqueous solution of sodium nitrite dropwise to the above solution, and after the completion of the reaction, (8) adding urea to the reaction mixture.
