Synthesis of carboxamides
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a substance useful as a polymer raw material without the necessity of handling a solid material and without forming a salt by reacting an aldehyde with an alcohol and an amide in a specified alcohol/amide ratio range and in the presence of a strong acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION: An aldehyde of formula I (R 1 is H, 1-6 C alkyl or aryl; R 2 is H or 1-6 alkyl) (example: acetaldehyde) is reacted with a compound of formula II (R 3 is benzyl, 1-8 C alkyl or hydroxylakyl) (example: ethanol) and an amide of formula III (R 4 is H, 1-6 C alkyl or aryl) (example: formamide) in an alcohol-amide ratio of 1/1-5/1 and in the presence of strong acid catalyst at 0-200°C (preferably 20-60°C) for 2-4 hr to obtain a compound of formula IV [example: secondary N-(1-ethoxy ethyl) formamide]. Acetal in the product mixture is recirculated directly to a raw material mixture. COPYRIGHT: (C)1990,JPO
