Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE: To effectively improve dark-to-bright gray scale by applying an amplitude modulated pulse, width modulated pulse, or amplitude-and-width compositely modulated pulse to a negative electrode or a positive electrode, and setting to selectively or totally generate discharge in a number of discharge zones of a number of intervals in which amplitude in each stage is formed by the negative electrode of irregular form. CONSTITUTION: By instantaneously applying a pulse voltage in simple form and pulse voltages stepwise solely or compositely, discharge zones can be selected, based on the voltages, that is, the amplitude. V1 is a discharge starting voltage at a part where a discharge interval is the shortest, and V2 and V3 are discharge starting voltages at parts where the intervals are longer in order. In this case, as the voltage V1 is applied, discharge is started in a discharge zone Z1 of a narrow interval, and as the voltage V2 is applied, discharge is started in discharge zones Z1 , Z2 in a discharge-possible range. As the voltage V3 is applied, discharge is started in all the zones Z1 , Z2 , Z3 in the discharge- possible range.
