Abstract

Abstract PURPOSE:To perform both contact developing and non-contact developing with a simple constitution by constituting a magnet attached to a developer carrier so that the magnet can perform a contact developing action and a non-contact developing action switchably and selectively. CONSTITUTION:The magnet 502 is provided so that it can be switchably and selectively changed over between a position where a magnet field is formed so that developer held on the developer carrier 501 is brought into contact with an electrostatic latent image side in a developing area, and a position where the magnet field is formed so that the developer on the developer carrier 501 is not in contact with the electrostatic latent image side in the developing area by switching means 502a - 502d. Thus, according to which component the electrostatic latent image formed on a latent image carrier 1 contains larger, the high spatial frequency component or the low spatial frequency component, the developer on the developer carrier 501 comes into contact with or not in contact with the electrostatic latent image. As a result, developing operation complying with each image condition can be performed. In this way, both contact developing and non-contact developing can be performed by a simple constitution.
