Catalyst and its use in hydrolysis of nitrile
Abstract
Abstract PURPOSE: To improve catalyst activity by a method in which when nitrile is hydrolyzed in an aqueous medium containing a copper catalyst containing vanadium to prepare corresponding amide, a preliminary formed black copper catalyst is treated with a water soluble vanadium compound. CONSTITUTION: When nitrile of the formula RCN (R is 1-10C hydrocarbon) is hydrolyzed in an aqueous medium containing a copper catalyst containing vanadium to prepare an amide of the formula RCONH 2 , a catalyst is prepared in advance from black copper, preferably Raney copper, the catalyst, after being contacted with a water soluble vanadium compound, preferably a vanadyl compound (especially vanadyl sulfate) or a vanadate compound (especially orthovanadate compound, sodium orthovanadate in particular), is washed until the vanadium compound is substantially eliminated to improve the selectivity and/or yield of the intended compound while one of them is being maintained.
