Improvements in or relating to the bonding of polyethylene terephthalate fibres to rubber
Abstract
Abstract In bonding fibres, e.g. tyre cords, of polyethylene terephthalate to natural rubber or synthetic rubber such as a butadiene or chlorobutadiene polymer or copolymer with styrene, acrylonitrile, or methyl methacrylate using an adhesive of butadiene-vinyl pyridine latex and resorcinol-formaldehyde solution, the fibres are treated preliminarily with 4 : 41-diisocyanate diphenyl methane or 4 : 41 : 411-triisocyanate triphenyl methane. A 1-20 per cent solution of the polyisocyanate in an organic solvent, e.g. methylene chloride, may be used for the fibre treatment, the amount of polyisocyanate applied being0.5-5 per cent of the fibre weight. The adhesive is exemplified by mixtures of a butadiene-vinyl pyridine latex of 41 per cent solids and water with resorcinol, aqueous formaldehyde, water, and caustic soda preparations.ALSO:In bonding fibres, e.g. tyre cords, of polyethylene terephthalate to natural or synthetic rubber using an adhesive of butadiene-vinyl pyridine latex and resorcinol-formaldehyde solution, the fibres are treated preliminarily with 4 : 41-diisocyanate diphenyl methane or 4 : 41 : 411 - triisocyanate triphenyl methane, which may be dissolved in an organic solvent, e.g. methylene chloride.
