Improvements in and relating to hall effect devices
Abstract
Abstract 705,248. Semi-conductor amplifier circuits. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Nov. 20, 1952 [Nov. 29, 1951], No. 29343/52. Class 40 (6). [Also in Group XXXVI] A device comprises a plate 11 of material such as germanium, which displays the Hall effect which is secured between two layers 16 and 17 of insulation between two ferromagnetic plates 18 and 19. Input terminals 12, 13, and output terminals 14 and 15 are secured to the edges of the Hall effect material, and may comprise several layers of foil. The Hall plate is made very thin i.e. .01 inches or less, so that the output impedance of the device is high. The ferromagnetic plates help to cool the device. Fig. 2 shows the device employed as an amplifier or mixer. The device 10 is mounted between the poles of electromagnet 31 energized from source 33. Input signals are applied from source 36, and the resulting output which is proportional to the strengths of the magnetic field and the current from source 36 is applied to the grid of a thermionic valve amplifier. If the current from the source 33 which produces the magnetic field, is also varied, the output is proportional to the product of the two current sources.
