[Class 130] [Also in Group VIII] A device. for severing an axially moving cigarette or other rod into lengths comprises a member rotatable about a fixed axis and restrained against lengthwise movement, a carrier for a cutting element which rotates with said member, the edge of the cutting element being transverse to the fixed axis, a resilient connection between the carrier and the member, and means other than cam-operated means for moving the carrier lengthwise of the fixed axis during revolution about the axis. As shown, a carrier 26 for a rotary knife 27 is connected by a resilient arm 14 to a rotating shaft 5, and is reciprocated lengthwise of the shaft 5 by a connecting element 13 pivoted about a cross spindle 12 at the end of the shaft 5. The element 13 comprises two parts connected by bridge pieces 17 carrying pivot pins 18, which enter the arms 19 of a member 20 on an inclined shaft 21. The resilient arm 14 comprises a number of leaf springs, and the knife carrier 26 is driven by a belt 30 passing over pulleys 28, 29 on the shaft 5 and the carrier 26 and over tensioning pulleys, two of which are supported on an arm 35 adjustably supported on a counterweight 34 which balances the knife carrier. The knife co-operates with a ledger tube 37, and grinding elements 40 are provided. The knife carrier is adjustable to compensate for wear, and the lengths of rod to be cut are adjusted by adjustment of the bearing 22 of the inclined shaft 21.
