Abstract

Abstract 420,102. Turning-gear ; starting. HEYWOOD, C. F., 6, Avenue de Jurigoz, Lausanne, Switzerland. May 26, 1933, No. 15279. [Class 7 (v)] In a pneumatic device for starting internalcombustion engines, comprising a turbine 18 and manually or automatically controlled means 17 for coupling the turbine to the engine through reduction gearing 15 and a friction clutch 16 of limited torque-transmitting capacity, the turbine rotor 18 is massive or has a flywheel 20 rotatable in one therewith and is set in rotation at high speed before the clutch 16 is engaged. As shown, the rotor 18 is a simpleimpulse or " Pelton " wheel having two feed nozzles 19 for compressed air, but it may be of the reaction type having multiple series of moving and fixed blades. The wheels 18, 20 are mounted on a hollow shaft 21 carrying a pinion 22 driving through spur wheels 23, 24 an internally toothed wheel 26 forming one member of the friction clutch 16 and rotatable about a shaft 27 on which the other clutch member 28 is splined. The clutch member 16 is held out of engagement (by means not shown) until the turbine has been set in rotation, and is then released and engagement is effected by a spring 29. The shaft 27 is coupled to the engine to be started by a member 31 splined at 30 to the shaft 27 and carrying a clutch member 32 or a pinion. The member 32 is normally disengaged from the engine shaft by a spring 33, and is moved into engagement by push rods 34, 35, which extend through the shafts 21, 27 and are actuated by a push-button 42 on a pushrod 40, or by a piston 38 in a cylinder 39, compressed air being admitted to this cylinder and to the turbine nozzles 19 on turning a cock 43. For starting by hand, the shaft 21 may be arranged to project from the device and to be engaged by a starting-handle, or the push rods 34, 35 may be enlarged to serve as shafts driven from a starting-handle, a normally disengaged claw coupling being provided between them, and the rod 34 being splined to the shaft 27. In a further modification, the device is lengthened and a bevel wheel, arranged on the shaft 27 between the pinion 22 and the clutch member 26, is driven from a hand-actuated shaft at right angles to the shaft 27. To facilitate starting by the injection of fuel into the engine, a fuel tank 51 within the part 12 of the casing has a non-return valve 52 connected by a hand pump 53 with a supply of fuel and through a further non-return valve 54 with a supply of compressed air, an outlet 55 from the tank being connected to the engine intake manifold or combustion space. Alternatively, a similar fuel tank 61 is mounted on the end plate 13 of the casing.
