Improvements in and relating to the dry moulding of ceramic materials
Abstract
Abstract Heavy metal soaps and other compounds of metals with organic bodies are used to confer mouldability on ceramic materials when they are dry moulded, before firing. The addition of the dry mouldable materials to the ceramic substances may be made by dry admixture or by precipitation in a liquid suspension of the ceramic material, by interaction of a metallic and an organic compound followed by drying and dry moulding. In examples the non-mouldable material consists of an aqueous suspension of (a) porcelain material or (b) aluminium oxide. An insoluble aluminium salt of a high molecular fatty acid is precipitated in the suspension, and the mixture dried. On firing in (a) aluminium silicate is produced while in (b) aluminium oxide is produced so that the whole body is composed of aluminium oxide. In a further example a glaze mixture of lime, silicic acid, felspar, and lead oxide is dry moulded as above and sintered at temperatures below 1000 DEG C. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of galalith, artificial resin, and the like as materials conferring mouldability, and of gypsum, plaster or cement in place of the ceramic material, these not being fixed, but after moulding hardened in the usual manner. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
