Abstract

Abstract 11,368. Parker, J. S. May 15. Theatrical appliances. - Relates to illnsion apparatus by means of which an object is apparently passed through a sheet of fabric without damaging it. The apparatus consists of a board 1, Figs. 1 and 4, supported by a hinged frame 2, the sides of which are connected to the edges of the board 1 by dark, opaque flexible material 3. The board has a hinged section 4 formed with an aperture, and a sheet 6 of black cloth fixed to the top and sides of the section extends to the bottom of the board 1 and conceals the fact that the board is made in two parts. The cloth 6 is split at 7 where it passes over the aperture in the hinged section, so that an object can be passed through from back to front. A rectangular box 10 with the back removed is suspended from the top of the board 1 by cords 11, and a sheet 13 of flexible material is fixed at its lower end to a side of the box, and at its upper edge to the board 1. The front of the box has an aperture which is almost closed by a piece of fabric 14 having radial slits. A sheet of fabric 8 is secured at its top edge to the hinged section, and at its lower end to stud fastenings 9 or the like on the board 1. The box 10 is placed in position on the front of the board, and the sheet 13, which is of the same width, colour, and material as the sheet 8, hides the upper part of the latter. The demonstrator, unseen by the spectators, lets down the hinged section 4 and passes his hand through the aperture 7, as shown in Fig. 4, thus apparently thrusting it through the sheet 8, which is afterwards shown to be undamaged.
