Improvements in or relating to the Aeration of Liquids or the Manufacture of Mineral Waters and Apparatus therefor.
Abstract
Abstract 25,501. Yeo, F. C., Hall, W. M., and Goskar, T. A. Nov. 26. Vessels discharged by pistons.-An apparatus for preparing and delivering aerated water, mixed or not with syrup, comprises a differential pump operated by the aerated liquid and serving to force the liquid to be aerated into the mixing-chamber. The pump consists of a cylinder 1, and a hollow piston 2 connected at its upper end with a hollow extension 3 which carries an aerating-chamber 14. The chamber 7 of the hollow piston serves as a reservoir of aerated liquid. Gas is supplied to the chamber 7 by a pipe 25, and water is supplied through a pipe 17 to the upper surface of the piston. The movements of the apparatus are controlled by a rotary plug valve 18 operated by a handle 19. In the position shown, the chamber 6 below the piston is connected by a pipe 26 with a chamber 7. On rotation of the cock 18, the pressure in the chamber 6 is snifted through a pipe 23 ; the pipe 17 is then connected with the water supply, and the chamber 6 with a discharge pipe. The water enters the cylinder 1 above the upper surface of the piston, and aerated liquid is discharged from the lower chamber 6. On return of the cock 18, the water supply is cut off and the chamber 6 connected with the chamber 7 of the hollow piston. Aerated liquid passes from the chamber 7 to the chamber 6 and raises the piston 2. The water above the piston is forced through ports 11 and a tube 12 into the mixing-chamber 14, from which the aerated liquid passes down the hollow trunk 3 into a chamber 9 in the hollow piston and through the sieve 10 and the tube 8 into the chamber 7. A ball valve 18 on the upper end of the pipe 3 prevents the gas pressure from acting on the upper surface of the piston. Water and syrup may be passed in regulated proportions through the pipe 17. The gas snifted from the chamber 6 may be used to aerate the water and syrup preliminarily. The movements of the piston 2 may be aided mechanically, and in this case a pump having equal piston areas at each side may be used. In a modification, a stationary mixing-chamber separate from the pump, and a differential pump with a solid piston, are used. The lever 19 may be arranged to be coin-freed. A recorder to show the number of times the apparatus is operated, and an indicator to show the position of the piston, may be used.
