Gas absorption
Abstract
Abstract In a process for the removal of CO2 from gas mixtures using acetone as solvent, sorption takes plate at -20 DEG F to 50 DEG F and superatmospheric pressure and the acetone contains 2 to 10% water, regeneration being by expansion and low pressure or vacuum stripping before the lean acetone obtained, having been thereby cooled, is recycled while the product gas from the sorber and the off gas from the stripper are washed preferably at high and low pressure respectively to remove acetone therefrom, the solution obtained being fractionated to recover of acetone therefrom for recycling. A portion of the recycled acetone from the stripper may also be passed to the fractionator in order to control the water content thereof. If the stripper is not operated under vacuum, a stripping gas such as nitrogen may be used. In a modification two stages of sorption are used, a first in a rich acetone and a second in a lean acetone, each on its own stripping system, but with a common wateracetone fractionator. In both embodiments, acetone is added to top up the system as required. The major application is to the preparation of pure H2, from mixtures also containing besides CO2, small quantities of CO and CH4.
