Hermetically enclosed rotary refrigerant compressor unit
Abstract
Abstract The compressor proper has a cylindrical chamber (18,24) between upper (20) and lower (22) end covers and is driven by a motor shaft (28) extending from above through the end cover (20). The chamber has an inlet and a valved (49) outlet port (40) in the cover (20) below the motor. An oil separator (50) comprises a housing (52;56,54,64) having a peripheral side wall (56) extending downwards to, and in sealing contact with, the perimeter of the cover (20), and a top (56). This housing defines an outlet chamber (58) with an annular outlet passage (60,62) around the shaft. Any oil contained in the compressed gas reaching the motor rotor is thrown outwards by centrifugal force to drip down into the sump whilst the compressed gas moves upwards to the outlet at the top of the housing.
