Appts. for producing fibrous webs of differing density - at matched speeds, using multiple lay=up drums
Abstract
Abstract Appts. for simultaneously preparing two or more continuous fibrous webs requiring different feed rates features a driven shaft on which one lay-up drum is directly mounted and on which at least one other drum is mounted coaxially, alongside the first drum, but driven via a speed reduction coupling from the same prime motor. Used esp. for preparing complementary layers of composite absorbant fabrics as used for sanitary pads, nappy linings, etc., having layers of differing compaction. Allows compressed layers to be supplied at the same output rate as the uncompressed layers for continuous subsequent superposition to produce the composite fabric. Esp. applicable to mfr. of non-woven cloth from processed wood pulp. Pref. the reduction drive coupling is a variable speed unit for adjusting the speed ratio of the drums to compensate for variable factors such as the dampness of the mat and the degree of relative compaction required.
