Abstract A duty cycle estimator determines a duty cycle for controlling a regulated output of an output regulator, which is responsive to the duty cycle for controlling the transfer of energy between an input source and the regulated output. The duty cycle estimator comprises an accumulator that determines an accumulated error over a time period greater than a switching period of the output regulator. A reference generator generates reference levels. A comparator compares the accumulated error to the reference levels at a maximum rate of approximately 100 times the switching period such that a single zero is generated and generates the duty cycle based on the comparing. <IMAGE>
A duty cycle estimator for determining a duty cycle for controlling a
regulated output of an output regulator that is responsive to the duty cycle for
controlling the transfer of energy between an input source and the regulated output,
comprising: an accumulator that determines an accumulated error over a time
period greater than a switching period of the output regulator; a reference generator that generates reference levels; and a comparator that compares the accumulated error to the reference
levels at a maximum rate of approximately 100 times the switching period such that
a single zero is generated and that generates the duty cycle based on the
comparing.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
47 words
The duty cycle estimator of Claim 1 wherein the reference levels
include at least a first reference level and a second reference level, and wherein the comparator compares the accumulated error to each of
the reference levels and in response to control the duty cycle by steps.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
26 words
The duty cycle estimator of Claim 1 wherein the accumulated error is
selected from a group consisting of average error, mean error, and weighted
average error.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
22 words
The duty cycle estimator of Claim 1 wherein the maximum rate is
approximately 1000 times the switching period of the output regulator.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
38 words
The duty cycle estimator of Claim 2 wherein each of the steps include
a predetermined portion of the duty cycle in a range of approximately 0.1% of a
maximum duty cycle to 5% of the maximum duty cycle.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
54 words
The duty cycle estimator of Claim 2 wherein if the accumulated error is
less than the first reference level, the comparator reduces the duty cycle by at least
one step, and wherein if the accumulated error is greater than the second reference
level, the comparator increases the duty cycle by at least one step.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
24 words
The duty cycle estimator of Claim 1 wherein the duty cycle
corresponds to an on-time, and the output regulator has a variable switching
frequency.
