Abstract

Abstract A fuel vapour purging method controls fuel vapour purging during stratified operation. Several factors influence vapour purge control, including fuel vapour concentration in the cylinder and temperature of the emission control device. The fuel vapour passes through the cylinder unburned by maintaining the concentration within allowable limits. The unburned fuel vapour reacts exothermically in the emission control device (70,72) thereby generating heat. To guarantee that the fuel vapour reacts in the first emission control device (70), the fuel vapour purge is restricted to a certain temperature range. To guarantee that the fuel vapour does not burn in the cylinder, the concentration is kept to a restricted value.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 74 words
A method for generating heat in an emission control device (70,72) coupled to an engine (10) having multiple combustion chambers (30), the method comprising: operating in a stratified mode where fuel is injected during a compression stroke of the engine; purging fuel vapours into the combustion chambers (30) that will pass through the chambers unburned, thereby providing unburned hydrocarbons and excess oxygen to react exothermically and generate heat in the emission control device (70,72).
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 27 words
A method as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said fuel vapour purging is performed during an engine start to rapidly increase temperature of the emission control device.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
A method as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said purging is performed when a temperature of the emission control device is less than a predetermined value.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said purging is performed when a temperature of the emission control device is within a predetermined range.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method as claimed in Claim 4, wherein said predetermined range represents a temperature range where exothermic reactions are possible.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 20 words
A method as claimed in Claim 5, wherein said temperature range is based on the emission control device washcoat materials.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 23 words
A method as claimed in Claim 1, wherein said fuel vapour purging is performed to increase temperature and desulphate the emission control device.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 78 words
A control method for an engine having multiple combustion chambers coupled to an emission control device, the method comprising the steps of: operating in a stratified mode where fuel is injected during a compression stroke of the engine; providing an indication of temperature of the emission control device; and purging fuel vapours into the combustion chambers when said temperature is below a predetermined threshold, thereby providing unburned hydrocarbons and excess oxygen to react exothermically and increase said temperature.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 31 words
A method as claimed in Claim 8 further comprising the step of adjusting an amount of said purged fuel vapours based on said temperature and a desired emission control device temperature.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 38 words
A method as claimed in Claim 8, wherein said purging step further comprises purging fuel vapours into the combustion chambers when said temperature is above a preselected threshold, with said preselected threshold is less than said predetermined threshold.
