Abstract One embodiment of the present invention is a method for controlling the number of
mobile-telephones transmitting acknowledgments to broadcast short messages (BSM) over a same set of
random access channels at a same time. In this embodiment, the transmissions of BSM acknowledgments
is controlled by the wireless communication system using random access channel restrictions and random
access techniques. Specifically, the random access channel restrictions reduce collisions among
acknowledging mobile-telephones and call processing mobile-telephones by allocating one or more
specific random access channels over which a BSM acknowledgment can be transmitted, and the random
access techniques reduce collisions among acknowledging mobile-telephones by distributing transmissions
of the BSM acknowledgments over a period of time.
A method for controlling transmissions on control channels in a wireless communication system
CHARACTERIZED BY the steps of: receiving a first message at a mobile-telephone indicating a control channel allocation;
and transmitting a second message from the mobile-telephone using the control channel
indicated in the first message.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
17 words
The method of claim 1, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT the first message is received over a
broadcast channel.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
18 words
The method of claim 1, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT the indicated control channel is a
particular random access channel.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
17 words
The method of claim 1, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT the first message further indicates a time
delay parameter.
Claim 5
Independent Claim
44 words
A method for controlling transmissions on channels in a wireless communication system
CHARACTERIZED BY the steps of: receiving a bit map at a mobile-telephone indicating a channel allocation; and transmitting a message from the mobile-telephone using the allocated channel indicated
in the bit map.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
43 words
The method of claim 7, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT the bit map includes a plurality of bit
values corresponding to a plurality of channels, each of the bit values indicating whether the
corresponding channel is allocated for transmission of the message by the mobile-telephone.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
59 words
A method for controlling transmissions on channels in a wireless communication system
CHARACTERIZED BY the steps of: receiving at a mobile-telephone a first message and a time delay parameter; generating a random number; and transmitting a second message in response to the first message after completion of a
period defined using the time delay parameter and the random number
Claim 8
Independent Claim
121 words
A method for controlling transmissions on random access channels in a wireless communication
system CHARACTERIZED BY the steps of: receiving at a mobile-telephone a random access channel allocation and a time delay
parameter; waiting a period defined using the time delay parameter and a random number; determining whether a current random access channel is the allocated random access
channel; repeating the step of determining whether the current random access channel is the
allocated random access channel for the next current random access channel if the current random
access channel is not the allocated random access channel; and transmitting a message from the mobile-telephone using the current random access
channel if the current random access channel is the allocated random access channel.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
31 words
The method of claim 18 CHARACTERIZED BY the additional step of: repeating the step of transmitting the message if the transmitted message was not
successfully received by the wireless communication system.
