Abstract
Abstract The gas composition or temperature or a combination of both is detected downstream of the adsorber (3). The exhaust gases are guided through the adsorber dependent on the detected gas composition or temperature or a combination of gas composition and temperature. The gas composition etc. is used to decide from what time the exhaust gas is no longer guided through the adsorber. The exhaust gas is made to bypass the adsorber when its temperature exceeds a predetermined boundary value, when hydrocarbons are detected in the gas composition, or when the gas composition upstream of the adsorber equals that downstream of the adsorber.
