Abstract

Abstract Transmission quality and throughput are improved when communication is carried out using fixed-length packets in wire circuits (106) between radio base stations (101) and a mobile switching centre (107) in mobile radio communications systems. To achieve this, low bit-rate digital information signals are converted to short packets by a plurality of information data assembly/disassembly circuits (103,113) provided in parallel. A plurality of these short packets are transmitted after being inserted into a long fixed-length packet by means of a fixed-length packet assembly/disassembly circuit (104,114) and a plurality of short packets are extracted from the fixed-length packet and then restored to the low bit-rate digital information signals by information data assembly/disassembly circuits. This enables high throughput, economical communication paths to be constructed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 230 words
A mobile radio communications system comprising one or more radio base stations (101) connected to mobile stations (100) by radio channels, and a mobile switching centre (107) connected to the or each radio base station (101) by wire circuits (106), wherein the mobile switching centre (107) and the radio base stations (101) have means (109,190) which transmit and receive fixed-length packets through the wire circuits, characterised in that: the means which transmit and receive have (i) a plurality of means (103,113) to which are input low bit-rate digital information signals, and which assemble short packets; and (ii) a plurality of means (103,113) to which are input short packets, and which dissemble these into low bit-rate digital information signals, the plurality of means (i) and (ii) being respectively provided in parallel; in that the fixed-length packets have a signal length which accommodates a plurality of the short packets; and in that the means which transmit and receive have (i) means (104,114) which accommodate the short packets that are output from the assembling means in the fixed-length packets in positions corresponding to the channels, and which transmit these to the wire circuits (106); and (ii) means (104,114) which extract and disassemble the packets accommodated in channel-corresponding positions in the fixed-length packets which arrive from the wire circuits, and which transfer them to channels corresponding to the positions in which they were accommodated.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 67 words
A mobile radio communication system as set forth in claim 1, wherein the transmitting and receiving means on the mobile switching centre side comprises a first fixed-length packet switch (108) which is provided between the wire circuits (106) and fixed-length packet assembly/disassembly means (114); and a second fixed-length packet switch (133) which is provided between the fixed-length packet assembly/disassembly means (114) and short packet assembly/disassembly means (113).
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 53 words
A mobile radio communications system according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the transmitting and receiving means on the radio base station side comprises a third fixed-length packet switch (105) provided between the fixed-length packet assembly/disassembly means (104) which is connected to the wire circuit (106), and short packet assembly/disassembly means (103).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 63 words
A mobile radio communications system according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the transmitting means comprises a timer (311); means which forms the fixed-length packets at time intervals preset in this timer; and means which, when the preset time interval has elapsed and there is spare capacity in the fixed-length packet, inserts dummy packets into the empty portion of the fixed-length packet.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 52 words
A mobile radio communications system as set forth in claim 4, wherein there is provided means (310) which discriminates the type of data contained in the short packets, and means which changes the preset time of the timer in accordance with the type of data that has been discriminated by this means.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 37 words
A mobile radio communications system as set forth in claim 5, wherein the aforementioned types of data are of two types, namely, voice data and non-voice data, and wherein the preset time is shorter for voice data.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 30 words
A mobile radio communications system according to any of claims 4 to 6, wherein the timer (311) comprises means which changes this preset time by means of an external signal.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 37 words
A mobile radio communications system according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the aforementioned short packets are comprised of control parts and data parts, and wherein a plurality of data parts share a single control part.
